THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING
One of our favourite places is Mkuze Game Reserve in KZN, South Africa. My wife, Ilse, and I, would leave the camp early every morning for a game drive, each holding a warm cup of coffee. Before setting off, I would meticulously check the camera equipment to ensure that it was ready for action when needed. I know from previous experience that you sometimes have only a split second to capture the image you are looking for!
On one of our early-morning drives, we spotted a black rhino on the side of the road near Nsumo Pan. Knowing that Black rhinos are notoriously short-tempered, he appeared nervous and agitated, which made me feel apprehensive. One moment he was looking at us, and the next moment he was at full charge! I could only take one or two quick reference photos, and that was it! We got away just in time! Upon reviewing it later that morning, I found the photo I was looking for! The moment when the rhino had attempted to charge was my "Magic Moment."
Back in my studio in Richards Bay, I aimed to capture the black rhino's intensity and beauty on canvas. It's an honour for me to share this special moment with the world and raise awareness about the importance of preserving these unique creatures.
